Jul 07, 2016 Makercise has built a nice oil fired foundry already so it’s off to the next book, Gingery 2, is the metal lathe. The Gingery books and, really, most DIY books from that era are: not well laid. Sep 28, 2000 My Homemade Metal Lathe Project. Yes I too am building a metal working shop from scrap using the books written by Mr. Dave Gingery. I figured, 'hey I already have a foundry why not build some really nifty machines?' Besides what is a laboratory without a precision indexing head or milling machine? Heck, the least I could do is build the lathe.
I've decided to start a new thread on my Gingery shaper build. So far I have completed the Column side frame pattern, except for the shellacing, started on the flask, and am modifying and completing the ram and ram cap patterns.
Gingery calls for a steel core, sooted up with candle soot or graphite. I have never tried this before. The pattern, at the present has a 3/4' half dowel as the core print for the tool head. How critical is the size of the core? I don't find any 3/4' steel in my scrap box. I have .667 stock. Can I get by using that without modifying the pattern, or should I modify the pattern?
The nearest dowel I have to the .667 stock size measures .640.

[Makercise] has been working on a Gingery Lathe since September last year. I corresponded with Dave back when the books first came out. Yes I too am building a metal working shop from scrap using the books written by Mr. Dave Gingery. I figured, “hey I already have a foundry why not build some. To bore the headstock accurately a temporary headstock assembly is made. Dave Gingery directs the reader to build an adjustable angle iron based assembly.
